NORTHERN NEWS NOW FEATURE:
Sisu Heritage Inc. focuses on preserving Finnish architecture in Embarrass
Meteorologist Dave Anderson is the longest serving broadcast meteorologist in the Northland with 31 years experience on the air with five more behind the scenes at Northern News Now which comprises channels 3 and 6. He’s a native of Ely with family roots in Babbitt and Tower-Soudan.
Anderson’s mother Sharon came from a Danish family in Babbitt. His father Terry came from a mixed marriage (Swedish and Finnish) in Tower-Soudan. The Danish Anderson girl and the Finn-Swede Anderson boy met at Ely Junior College thanks to alphabetical order being enforced in most classrooms. Both passed away recently after decades of teaching in the Ely School District.
Dave is a graduate of Ely Memorial High School, Vermilion Community College, UMD with a degree in communications and Mississippi State University with a degree in meteorology.
Anderson started his broadcasting career as janitor at Channel 3 in 1986. He moved up to production assistant at Channel 6 in 1987. There, he assisted Jack McKenna in drawing computer weather maps and that sparked an interest in meteorology that lasts today.
Away from the TV station, Dave is an adjunct instructor of meteorology for Lake Superior College. He has also taught weather at Northland College in Ashland, WI. One of those students was Adam Lorch who is now chief meteorologist at Northern News Now.
Anderson has also served as a Coast Guard Auxiliarist for 25 years. The Auxiliary is the boating safety branch of Coast Guard Forces. He is national director of marketing for AUX.
Dave is proud of being a lifelong Northland native and feels his Finnish roots from the Marttila family in Tower give him the sisu needed to make semi-accurate forecasts for the greatest region in the world, the Embarrass Valley!
